CLUTTERMAN UNCLUTTERED CORNER
A GATHERING OF THE GREATS
Hi -
I’ve been told that my attention span is sometimes too limited. I get bored with the repetition and the oftentimes inactivity of some sporting events. Having said that, I admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the 2008 Beijing Olympics. From the breath- stopping opening ceremony to its’ mesmerizing closing performance, and almost all the events in between, it was absolutely spectacular! China, with its’ 4 billion dollar budget, and countless countrymen, put on a show that I doubt will be equaled in our lifetime.
I was so proud of our American athletes, whose skill and professionalism were magnificent! Other countries provided what they believed to be their best performers---some a lot less as competent as presumed and some not as professional as they could be. China, while putting on a great show, had officials question the qualifying ages of some of their stars. To me it seemed as if some of the tumblers, gymnasts, and divers from China hardly made it to their tween years, much less the l6 year old+ requirement. In a heavily controlled and oppressive nation, I doubt few of its citizens will fess up to any actual or unintended misrepresentations.
Overall, however, it was a wonderful show, and cured me of some of my trepidation about anticipated boredom. Let’s see if the Vancouver Winter 2010 Olympics, and Summer 2012 Olympics in London can even closely come to replicate the ’08 extravaganza.
